At Home With Charles Mingus
A short post is often a good post. Here’s some rather extraordinary footage of Charles Mingus playing with his daughter and being interviewed in the 1960s. The next day he was evicted by the police from his apartment:
The film is Thomas Reichmann’s Mingus: Charlie Mingus 1968.

And the next day, when he wsa evicted, they burned his 18th century bass in the street. Not the brightest day in American musical history.
You’re right Ed, definitely not a highlight of musical history. Mingus seemed to always be in conflict with the world – whether it was his musicians or with authorities, and this anger seemed to inform his music.
Extraordinary, however that this particular event was captured on film in such a candid way.
