Story Time

Spending some time recently cleaning out my hard drive, I rediscovered a short story I wrote a few years ago. It’s entitled How We Destroyed Panama, and anyone who is interested can pick it up in PDF format here (5,800 words, 11 pages).

Reading over it again with a few year’s hindsight, there’s very little story, and what story there is, has very little to do with Panama. The writing is uneven, but I figure as I’m giving away the story for free, nobody really can complain too much.

(The usual disclaimers apply regarding coincidental resemblance to real people and events.)

Winnie, Tigrou et les bébés singes

Today I set out to write an intelligent and interesting post for the blog, but then saw this video (via Miss Expatria), and realised that anything I wrote could never compete with Capucine and her “popotamus that is allergic to magic”.

Not only is the story charming, but I’m simply jealous of the way someone her age gracefully dances through the pluperfect reflexive verbs (“ils s’étaient perdus”) and the literary narrative past tense (“il décida”). These are aspects of grammar I struggled with well into university years.  Oh, to be a native speaker!

Merry Christmas 2008

Photo: MikeBaird

Happy Christmas to all the readers and subscribers to this blog. I hope you have a restful holiday, whether you are travelling, spending time with family or friends, or staying home.

For anyone interested in a Christmas-time story for the kids, I suggest David Haywood‘s short story, The Secret Talent of Albert Otter:

There was no doubting that Albert Otter was different.

“Our other children don’t particularly care for fish,” said Albert Otter’s mother, “but Albert Otter will eat nothing else. And our other children walk on two legs, but Albert prefers to walk on four. And none of our other children have fur, or a tail like Albert does — or such sharp teeth.”…

Paradise

Here, in unexpurgated glory, is the complete, original story of the Journey to Paradise. Thanks to Rushan for spurring me on to dig this up! I wrote this short story in mid 2002. It is inspired by an actual journey taken in that year by a certain special group of people , to a place that is marked on maps of New Zealand as “Paradise”. Yes, it is a real place, although I am still not sure to this day where it actually is.

Until yesterday, I hadn’t read this story for almost 3 years, and it prompted a lot of memories about a key time in my life. I’m not quite sure if I am the narrator or not, he/she certainly sounds a lot more authoritative about the expedition than I recall feeling at the time. Although the text was only read once in public at at youth service at St Paul’s Remuera, it strikes me that it could have made a great short voice play for radio… ah, another project for a rainy day.

The story is best read accompanied with a large pinch of salt or some of your favourite music. I suggest the following, the opening track on Trinity Root’s album “True”, which I was discovering for the first time during those short, cold days surrounded by the Southern Alps.

Enjoy, and comments are very welcome.
